So i’ve been a little slow to post news and updates recently – due mostly to my new venture – “The 3D Printer Experience” – a hybrid makerspace / retail store here in Chicago. I’m one of the Co-founders of the space along with colleagues Holly Holmes, Michael Moceri, Julie Friedman Steele, Bobby Zylstra, Dan Gracy and Jeff Steele. At The 3D Printer Experience (3DPX) we offer a range of experiences to consumers and business people alike to give them an insight into 3D printing and how it might disrupt their lifestyle and business models in the near future.
I have been heading up the educational component of our programming at 3DPX teaching workshops in 3D scanning with 123d Catch, and introductory courses instructing people how to use the Makerbot type machines. It has been a lot of fun to engage with people from all walks of life and introduce them to this innovative way of making things. What has been especially encouraging is to see the demand from all sectors of the community – 3d printing is hot and people want to know more. In addition to the educational aspect Holly and I have been putting our curatorial hats on to bring together artists and designers from around the makersphere to exhibit and display in the 3DPX gallery. Over the next three – four weeks we are putting the spotlight on Sophie Kahn who just graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA, Art and Technology.) We have previously exhibited Sophie’s work at What It Is last year in the group exhibition “Improbable Objects.” We’re thrilled to have one of Sophie’s life size pieces currently in the gallery.
