For Chicago Artists Month 2013, I am Artist in Residence at the Innovation Lab, a Makerspace located in the Harold Washington Library, Chicago. The HWL is the main public library in Chicago and the Innovation Lab is a popular addition to their programming and facilities offering members of the public an opportunity to learn digital fabrication technologies like 3D Printing, CNC Milling, Laser Cutting, Arduino based electronics and much much more.
During the residency I am working on my second 3D printed book with City of Chicago cultural historian Tim Samuelson. Together we are creating 3D scans of early ornaments by celebrated architect Louis Sullivan. We will publish these scans in a single volume both electronically on Thingiverse and physically as 3D printed objects. People will be able to download these scans and reinterpret, remix and redistribute them as they see fit.
In addition to working on the Sullivan project during the residency I will be leading a series of four 3D scanning / printing work shops teaching people to create replica scans of the world around them. We will use software applications 123D Catch, Meshmixer and Netfabb to produce 3D printable scans from photographs produced using digital cameras and this free software of textures, objects and sculptures.
A copy of Orihon (Accordion Book) is on display at the Innovation Lab for the duration of the residency. I will be giving a presentation on Saturday 10/26 between noon and 1pm to talk about the Orihon book, present scans made during the residency and discuss the progress so far on the Sullivan project – i hope that you will be able to join us.
