AIC Studio, Day 28. It started innocently enough. Prepped the Big Z for a fairly epic 200mm tall looping, spiraling form that i designed in Rhino last night. I loaded it up via SD and watched as it printed the first layer fine and then stopped. Dead.
Kaput. :(
Dialing in, Surabhi and I traced problem to a transistor at the extruder fan connector that failed as a result of two wires touching. Basically the electrical tape shielding them fell off and they touched.
Luckily i had a spare Printrboard on an as yet to be built Printrbot Plus, so we labeled the wires, and switched out the boards. The X and Y still need a wee bit of calibrating – ( h/t to Zheng3 for this awesome step by step ) but the Z and the Extruder seem to be pretty good. And four hours later we were printing just in time for the Museopunks podcast interview.
Lesson learned – check wiring periodically – especially on DIY machines.
Here’s some video from early in the week when it was printing just fine
